Humility in the face of success is one of the markings of a true leader. The ability, not only to motivate oneself, but to also motivate others is yet another. Dorothy Ghettuba has these and a lot more as she features yet again in the 2014 Top 40 Women under 40 list.
Spielworks Media, her brain child, has grown leaps and bounds over the last half decade, not only providing employment for a large number of youth in our country, but also telling Africa stories in an authentic and sincere way. Most of us have watched, know of or have heard of a Spielworks Media production at some point or another. Spielworks Media content is now a part of national, regional and international homes as people tune in to watch the stories of Africa as they are told by the dedicated and talented Spielworks family.
But beyond this being a labor of commerce, it is a labor of love for Dorothy Ghettuba, who quit her day job in corporate Canada to start a content creation and production company in Kenya. Failure was never an option on the table for her and despite numerous challenges along the way she kept on. And with the help of extraordinary people in her life, she transformed Spielworks Media from producing just one show – BlOCK D – to what it is today.
Currently, Spielworks Media has produced several drama series like HIGHER LEARNING and SAINTS, Four soap operas – LIES THAT BIND, BLOCK D, SUMU LA PENZI and the much anticipated JANE AND ABEL, Several talk shows like LADIES FIRST, THE HOT SEAT, BREAKING POINT, DEEPER and THE SCOOP.
Dorothy is indeed a general, but one who leads her troops with words of encouragement and great positivity. She provides opportunities to young and incredibly talented individuals. Hers is the motto of never giving up, and if you can dream it you can achieve it. One only has to look at what she has achieved to believe that there is something to this belief.
She is not only an inspiration to young women out there who wants to break out of the mold but also to every single creative who might not see their talent as a viable avenue to pursue. Her belief in herself and her conviction in what she wants and believes would give even the greatest of unbelievers hope and faith in their own dreams. Never be afraid to try something new, it might just be your salvation – your big break.
We can only guess what Dorothy Ghettuba shall do next, but if we are to go by history, it will most certainly be great – a great Kenyan triumph.
